Winter Farming

I've had a few friends and family reach out to say, "Are you okay? You haven't been blogging...what's up?" Oh, I'm sorry! Yes, I'm fine. I'm resting, snuggling in, slowing down and nesting. I'm great...just taking cues from Mother Nature. After the insanity of what felt like a non-stop Fall harvest, I needed a little breather is all - the chance to move in my own directions rather than sloshing around in the waves of farm demands. I don't think I stopped picking raspberries until well into November this year! It was a long season in the garden.
Once the weather started turning cold, I focused on interior projects that had been pestering and demanding attention...window washing led to wall patching and painting and then a little redecorating. With the house back to clean and tidy, now I'm ready for a long winter snuggle.
I'm not the best all-season farmer. Actually, I'm quite the fair weather friend preferring artsy projects near the wood stove in the winter. William, however is out and about still full time farming - filling, loading and hauling orders for bedding and feed. Once he's done with that work, he'll set his sights to doing some shop work or cleaning seed on the really cold days, but if it's above zero, he'll be out hauling dead logs or cutting firewood. He keeps himself very busy outdoors most of the year.
The Farm Store is OPEN
Last week we went through the Farm Store and pulled some of the products that can't handle getting frozen, but most of what we offer can stay put for the winter. Customers this time of year come looking for the birdseed and animal feed we have bagged in the store, and wow, do folks love our soups! We had great fun with end of season garden veggies turning them into wonderful soups frozen for easy mid-winter meals. Fruit and berries had a big year on the farm as well, so you'll find many special jams and jellies. And, quiet winter weather always inspires me to make felted wool hats. These hats are great for those of you who enjoy a warm head on your winter walk or for the whimsical who relish in donning a silly hat in the Finish Sauna.
We are off the beaten path, no doubt, but for anyone looking for unique holiday gifts, Lake View Organic Farm might just have something you'd like. Maybe your gardening friend would like a dozen straw bales for next year's garden. Maybe your horse riding niece would like some of William's exceptional hay in her barn this year. Maybe your birds would enjoy some of our sunflower seeds in the winter feeders. All of these things are available in our Farm Store. To place an order larger than our grab 'n go options, for hay, straw or animal seeds/feed, get in touch with William. He'll hook you up:)
Life is quiet and peaceful this time of year on the farm and all is good!
Sending peace and mountains of love your way,
Sarah Brenner
