Other Than Farming?

First crop hay is all in - meaning baled and pulled from the fields. Now that the sun is shining, much of second crop has been cut and William will likely rake and bale it tonight and tomorrow. Once second crop is all in, he'll turn to combining the rye then rake and bale the straw for the gardeners who shop our store. In a few weeks, third crop hay will be ready and he'll start the cut, rake, bale rotation all over again. Note: We usually get three crops of hay a year...occasionally four if the weather is just right.
But, what does William do when he has extra time between all this work? Well, lately he's been junking. He's well known in the area as the guy who will take metal. He used to run the Salem Town Dump until it closed so the junk job landed easily in his lap. People bring stuff to the farm, he piles it up out back and when the metal prices are in his favor, he starts hauling it off to the big recyclers. This week he hauled out a load of old broken lawn mowers and today a load of washers, dryers and water heaters.
I love it when the junkyard out back gets tidied up, and William is happy to bring in a little cash during these lean months on the farm. WIN WIN!

FARM STORE
Wow is it hot, but the AC is on in the store keeping things nice and cool. It's been a busy couple of weeks since it's pickin' time for blueberries at our neighbor's place down the road at Rush River Produce. Their farm brings a lot of cars up our old country road. If you've never picked berries here before, don't hesitate! It's a gorgeous farm with way more than just blueberries...the gardens are SPECTACULAR. Don't miss it. Always call them to get a "Picker's Report" for the day you hope to visit. They are open Thursday-Sunday 8-2.
If you're thinking to head this way this weekend, Saturday, July 18th is the Stockholm Art Fair.
I'll likely be watching the World Cup Third Place Playoff on Saturday and the WORLD CUP on Sunday. I was really hoping Mexico would have gone further. Then I hoped Norway would advance and now I'm rooting for SPAIN! My cousins stopped in last weekend just as I was on my way to watch a game. They commented, "Wow! We didn't know you were such a fan." It's true, I'm not into sporting events at all, but in this case, when the WORLD in any shape or form lands in Western Wisconsin, I get all jazzed up!
Kinda the same reason I have Iranian spice blends in the store right now. Subliminal wink wink!
Stay cool and spread the LOVE!
Sarah
